Rights and Royalties

When you purchase a playscript from Drama by George, you’ll choose one of these three options.

  1. Script Only means that you’re buying a single electronic copy of a playscript for personal reading purposes, with no rights to copy, distribute, or perform the play.
  2. Script + Copying Rights means that in addition to purchasing a copy of the playscript (see previous bullet point), you’re licensing the limited rights to make paper copies of the playscript and/ or to distribute the digital playscript.
  3. Script + Copying & Performance Rights means that in addition to everything outlined above (see two previous bullet points), you’re licensing the limited rights to perform the play for a live, in-person or virtual audience. Under certain limited circumstances, you may also record the video and/ or audio of a production.

Script Only

If you purchase a copy of a playscript but not a license for COPYING or PERFORMANCE rights:

  • You MAY download one digital copy and/ or print one paper copy of the play.
  • You MAY NOT copy, transmit, distribute, perform, or record the play. The script is provided solely for reading and evaluation purposes. All sales of scripts are final.

Script + Copying Rights

If you purchase a playscript with a license for COPYING rights but not PERFORMANCE rights:

  • You MAY make as many paper copies of the play as needed for classroom use by students in class(es) which are personally taught by you, the purchaser, and/ or make the digital version of the play available to students in class(es) which are personally taught by you, the purchaser, for a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase. The digital version of the script may be shared via email with individual students in your classes or by posting it online in a location accessible only to members of your class(es).
  • You MAY NOT give any performance of the play unless the students in classes personally taught by you, the original purchaser, are the only audience members. You may not copy, transmit, distribute, perform, or record the play except as permitted above. Copying rights are not transferrable. All sales of scripts and licensing of rights are final.

Script + Copying & Performance Rights

If you purchase a playscript with a license for both COPYING rights and PERFORMANCE rights:

  • YOU MAY give unlimited amateur performances of the play before live, in-person audiences and/ or live, virtual audiences (people watching online via a live stream or similar medium) for a period of one (1) year from the original date of purchase. Any such performances must be directed or produced personally by the original purchaser.
  • YOU MAY make as many paper copies of the playscript as needed for all participants (such as actors, designers, and technicians) in your production(s); and/ or make the digital version of the playscript available to all participants in your production(s). The digital version of the script may be shared via email with individual production participants or by posting it online in a location accessible only to production participants.
  • YOU MAY allow your live performances to be recorded by individual members of the audience, cast, and/ or production staff using their camera phones or similar devices (or in the case of a livestream, using their own computers) for personal noncommercial use only. These recordings may not be sold, posted online, or shared with others.
  • YOU MAY NOT create or allow to be created any other recording, broadcast, or transmission of the play, including video recordings that are distributed to anyone outside the household of the person who makes the recording. All such uses require the explicit written permission of the author and the payment of an additional fee. (However, see the EXCEPTION below for Screenplays and Radio Plays.*) In short, do not copy, distribute, record, perform, or transmit the play or playscript under any circumstances not permitted above. Copying and Performance rights are not transferrable. All sales of scripts and licensing of rights are final.
  • WHAT STANDARD PERFORMANCE RIGHTS DON’T COVER: Standard Performance Rights licensed from dramabygeorge.com explicitly do not cover (a) professional performances in which actors are paid any amount for their services, (b) touring performances in which the acting company performs in multiple venues, and (c) performances for which the video and/ or audio of the play are recorded, transmitted, or broadcast in any form except as permitted above. For professional performance rights and all other rights not covered under the standard royalty fee, please contact the author at drama@dramabygeorge.com.

*EXCEPTION FOR SCREENPLAYS AND RADIO PLAYS: If a script is designated on the cover or title page as a Screenplay or Radio Play and you have licensed Copying and Performance Rights, you may do ONE of the following (but not both): (1) Perform the production for a live, in-person or virtual audience, as permitted above, OR (2) record the video and/ or audio of the production and post the recording online using a service such as YouTube. You may also exhibit the recorded audio/ video on your school’s video announcements or similar in-house media. So long as you are only exhibiting your production in ONE of the aforementioned media (live performance or recorded video/ audio), you do not need to license additional rights. Any other recording, broadcast, or transmission of Screenplays and Radio Plays—including television, radio, or internet broadcast—requires the explicit written permission of the author and the payment of an additional fee.
