FAQ

STUDENT SIGNUPS FAQ

Can I take pictures of the performance? Can I record the performance on video?

You’re always welcome to take pictures! Please ensure that your phone or camera is set to silent and that the flash is disabled. You can also record a video; however, copyright restrictions preclude it from being posted online. If you anticipate needing to raise your camera above eye level to get good shots, please stand in the back so that you don’t disturb other audience members’ enjoyment of the play.

Do you offer scholarships?

Sorry, we currently aren’t able to provide scholarships for our drama programs.

How do I know I can trust you with my kids?

Drama by George has been investing in Louisville-area students since 2007. In that time, we’ve delivered thousands of programs to tens of thousands of students! Some of our young actors have gone on to work professionally in theatre, and many more of them have had a great time while internalizing life skills like teamwork, creativity, and self-confidence. To help ensure student safety, all of our teaching artists undergo a background check. Learn more about our mission to grow students with compassion and character through the power of stories here.

How do I register for drama club or drama camp?

For after-school drama clubs, go to https://dramabygeorge.com/dramaclubs/ and click on the REGISTER NOW button for the program that interests you. If you need more information before you sign up, click the DETAILS button.

For summer drama camps, go to https://dramabygeorge.com/summercamps/ and click on the REGISTER NOW button for the program that interests you. If you need more information before you sign up, click the DETAILS button.

There are a few programs for which our partner organization (like the school that’s hosting a drama club) manages registrations. If that’s the case, you may not see the program listed on the pages specified above. Please get in touch with your child’s school or contact us for registration information.

How early can I drop off my child for a drama camp or a morning drama club?

We’ll be ready to welcome your young actor 10 minutes before the published start time of the program. Please don’t deliver your child before then unless you’re able to wait with them, as we can’t be responsible for supervising them.

Is my credit card information secure?

The data that you send us, including your payment information, is encrypted for security using SSL protocol. In most web browsers, you can verify that you’re on a secure site by looking for the padlock icon to the immediate left of the website address at the top of your screen.

May I register for drama club or drama camp now and pay later?

Sorry, we can’t hold a place for your child in our programs until their tuition is paid in full. Please be prepared to pay with a credit or debit card at the time of registration.

My child is struggling to memorize their lines. How can I help them?

Here are some tips and tricks for young actors who are learning lines.

My child’s school has two drama clubs scheduled on the same day of the week. Can you place my child in the same group as their friend(s)?

As you would expect, there are a number of factors that go into dividing our young actors into groups, including age and experience levels of students. (For example, we want to balance our groups so that one cohort isn’t all second graders who have never done theatre before, while the other cohort is all fifth graders who have.) For that reason, we can’t guarantee that two students will be placed in the same group. That said, if you send us a request at the time of registration, we’ll do our best to pair your child with a friend they’d like to be matched with.

My child will miss the last session of their drama club or drama camp (which means missing the performance). Should they still sign up?

We recommend not registering your young actor for a program if they’ll miss the performance. Most of what we do in our drama clubs and drama camps is about rehearsing for the play, so your child may want to wait for another opportunity when they can be there at showtime.

What are the times and dates for drama club or drama camp?

For drama clubs, visit this page, then click the DETAILS button for the club you’re interested in. For drama camps, visit this page, then click the DETAILS button for the camp you’re interested in.

What if I can’t pick up my child at the time the program ends?

Unfortunately, we can’t provide care for your child after the scheduled dismissal time. Before you register your young actor, please make sure someone can get them home after rehearsals! You will be charged a fee for late pickups according to our policy listed under item 4, “Picking Up Your Child from Our Drama Clubs or Drama Camps.”

If you’re signing your child up for an after-school drama club and their school offers an aftercare program (like CEP), you may be able to send them there when drama club dismisses. Please direct aftercare questions to the school.

What if my child doesn’t like their part in the play?

Every child will have a role in the culminating performance. That means that everybody gets to participate in rehearsing the play—and typically, it also means that everybody will have fun! However, it’s a part of theatre (and life) that not everybody will love their role on the team every time. Even professional actors frequently don’t get the roles they want. We encourage you to help your child have a good attitude about continuing to attend rehearsals as a part of a team. They can learn a lot about acting even if they didn’t get their dream part, both by rehearsing their own role and observing the other actors at work. (Sorry, we don’t offer refunds for students who don’t like their roles.)

What if my child has stage fright?

Most of the time, even kids who feel a little nervous do a great job onstage after they’ve rehearsed for the show! If it will make them more comfortable (and if they tell us on the first day of the program), we can ensure that they have a small speaking part or even a nonspeaking role in our performance.

That said, if your child is typically anxious in front of people, it’s possible that they aren’t quite ready to try drama club or drama camp. We encourage you to assess their comfort level before you sign them up.

What if the drama club or drama camp I’m interested in is full? What if the deadline has passed and registration is closed?

If the program you’re interested in is full, we’re sometimes able to offer a waiting list. In that case, you’ll see a “JOIN WAITLIST” button on the drama club or drama camp listing. If a place opens up in the program that interests you, we’ll be in touch. If there’s not a button for a waiting list, sadly, the program is completely closed and cannot accept any more students.

What kind of costume will my child need to wear?

For after-school drama clubs, your child will receive a letter to bring home, usually about halfway through the rehearsal process, that spells out costume needs for each student. Please check your child’s backpack if you didn’t receive it! We typically also send an email to the email address you provided at the time of registration with a link to costume information. All of the items your child needs will probably be found in their closet–or at worst, you might need to make a quick trip to Goodwill. We try to ensure that finding costume items won’t be a burden for our young actors’ families.

For summer drama camps, your child will usually bring home a letter on the first day of camp that includes costume information. All of the items your child needs will probably be found in their closet–or at worst, you might need to make a quick trip to Goodwill. We try to ensure that finding costume items won’t be a burden for our young actors’ families.

What’s your refund and cancellation policy?

You can find our policy here under item 5, “About Cancellations and Refunds.” Please note that this policy applies to programs for which registrations are managed by Drama by George. Sometimes a partner organization (like the school hosting a drama club) handles registrations, in which case their cancellation and refund policy supersedes ours. Please contact them to learn about their policies.

What will my young actor do in drama club or drama camp?

Our summer drama camps are all a little different, but you can access a description of each one here by clicking the DETAILS button for the program that interests you. Broadly speaking, your child will learn about theatre through educational activities and rehearse a play that they’ll perform for you on the last day of camp.

In our after-school drama clubs, what students do will depend upon the format of the drama club. In Center Stage and Drama Fun, our most popular drama clubs, students work to rehearse a short play that they’ll perform for their families at the end of our final session. (In Center Stage, students perform a scripted play, and everyone gets a speaking part. In Drama Fun, students perform primarily in pantomime—acting without words—and everyone gets a pantomime part.) Our Spotlight program is a little different: students learn about a different theatre skill each week through educational activities. They may perform a short showcase demonstrating the skills they’ve learned at the end of the final session.

When and where will the students perform?

Students generally perform at the end of the final session of their drama club or drama camp. The performance will be held in the same building as your child’s regular rehearsals, although the room may be different. Your child will receive a letter to bring home from their first rehearsal, and/ or we’ll send an email to the email address you provided at the time of registration, with details about the performance time and location.

Where will my child’s drama club or drama camp meet?

After-school drama clubs are always held onsite at the host school. Find our summer drama camp sites here. You’ll need to click on the DETAILS button for a specific camp to see the location.

Who will teach my child’s drama program?

We can’t guarantee that your child will have a specific instructor, but their teacher will be an arts educator experienced in working with both theatre and kids. All of our teaching artists, no matter how experienced, complete an intensive training process to learn Drama by George’s DNA. To help ensure student safety, all of our employees and contractors who work with children undergo a background check. You can read bios of our amazing teaching artists here.

Will I get a partial refund if my child is absent for one or more rehearsals?

Sorry, we don’t provide refunds for missed rehearsals or performances. This policy applies regardless of the reason for the absence.

Will my young actor get a part in the play?

Yes! Everyone who registers for drama club or drama camp will have a part in our performance. In our programs where students perform a scripted play, like Center Stage Drama Club, everyone will have a speaking role with at least three lines. In other programs, like Drama Fun Club, the actors may not speak, or they may only talk as part of a group. But rest assured that everyone will have an important role to play!

PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS FAQ

Are you available on the date I’d like to schedule?

You can review our calendar here to get a general idea of our availability. If you’d like to check specific dates with us, fill out a scheduling request form. We’ll be in touch within two business days to set up your program. Please provide multiple date options so that we can maximize the chances of finding one that works for both of us!

Can we record your program on video?

Sorry, video and audio recording of our copyrighted programs is prohibited.

Can we take pictures of your program and share them with our families?

Absolutely! You’re welcome to take pictures and share them so long as the images are not used for commercial purposes.

Can you deliver programs at multiple schools in our district on the same day?

If the setup time allows it, yes. However, the setup for our performances is often extensive, so scheduling can be tight. Please contact us to see if we can make it work!

Do our staff members need to remain in the room with the students during your program?

We always require that teachers attend our programs with their students, and we strongly encourage them to sit with their classes (not off to the side or in the back). The only exception is after-school programs: Your teachers do not need to attend the program because our teaching artists manage their own classrooms.

Do you offer a program about ___ (the SEL topic I’m looking for)?

We offer programs on numerous SEL (social emotional learning) topics, including Achievement and Resilience, Bullying Prevention, Conflict Resolution, Creativity and Self-Confidence, Diversity and Equity, and Empathy. Plus, we have offerings that are Just for Fun or address Theatre Skills. Please contact us to learn more about any of our programs.

Do you offer discounts?

We’ve tried to keep our prices as low as possible—we really do understand how limited school and nonprofit budgets can be! However, we aren’t able to offer additional discounts.

Do you provide discussion questions or other educator resources for your programs?

For many of our most popular programs, yes! You’ll receive a link to the resource packet (if available) when you schedule a performance.

Do your programs come to us or do we come to you?

All of our performances and workshops come to your location! There’s no need to transport your students to enjoy a Drama by George program.

How do I know I can trust you to deliver a high-quality program for my students?

Drama by George has invested in more than 88,000 students since 2007. In that time, we’ve delivered thousands of programs to hundreds of schools and organizations! Frankly, we wouldn’t be around after all these years if we didn’t provide quality programs. Learn more about our mission to grow students with compassion and character through the power of stories here. To help ensure student safety, all of our employees and contractors who work with students undergo a background check.

How do I schedule a program at my school?

Fill out our scheduling request form with as much information as you can. We’ll be in touch within two business days to set things up!

How far in advance do I need to schedule?

We don’t have a formal booking deadline for our programs. However, contacting us as early as possible ensures the broadest date availability. Fill out our scheduling request form to start the process.

How long do you need to set up and tear down? Can other activities be taking place in the same room while you set up and tear down?

Setup time varies by program. For our smaller-scale workshops and performances, it can be as little as 15 minutes before the program and another 15 minutes afterwards. For our larger-scale performances, it can be as much as 90 minutes before the program and another 75 minutes afterwards. We’ll communicate setup and teardown times by email when you schedule a program.

We understand that sometimes, students may need to be present during setup or teardown. (For example, if we’re performing in the gym, maybe that’s where you dismiss car riders.) However, students must be seated and supervised—no running or throwing balls! It only takes a split-second to destroy sound equipment.

How much do your programs cost?

The base price for each performance or workshop can be found on its program page (here’s an example of a program page). Look underneath the large image that spans the whole page. Directly below the picture, you’ll see a broad red bar with information in it. The price can be found on the far right side of the red bar.

Additional charges may apply under some circumstances, most commonly for travel outside the Louisville Metro area. Complete a scheduling request form for a custom price quote.

How much space do you need to set up?

It depends on the program. Most of our performances require a 30’ x 20’ stage area (which does not need to be a raised platform). Most of our classroom workshops require a large, open classroom (libraries and music rooms typically work well). We’ll include more details in your contract when you schedule a program.

My school district requires a price quote before we formally schedule a program. Can you provide one?

Sure! Please fill our a scheduling request form to get the booking process started.

We have more students at our school than the capacity of your program. What can we do?

We place limits on group size to ensure that every student has a positive experience. If you’d like us to serve additional students, a second session on the same date in the same location is available for a discounted rate. (The amount of the discount depends on the program; please contact us for the exact rate.)

We don’t schedule programs for groups larger than the capacity listed on the program page. For example, the capacity for The Grit Game Show is 400 students. If you want us to serve 500 students, we’ll need to schedule two sessions. Our workshop sizes are capped to ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in the activities. Our performance sizes are capped because of the inherent limitations of live performances: actors start to look like ants beyond a certain distance, and even with microphones, they become hard to hear and understand in large rooms.

What forms of payment do you accept?

You’re welcome to pay by school purchase order or organizational check. Please ensure that either (1) we receive your valid purchase order before the program date, or (2) you have a check made payable to Drama by George LLC ready for us on the day of your program. If you prefer to pay by credit card, there is a surcharge for card transactions. For details, see the “Paying by Credit Card” section on this page.

What if we need to reschedule our program?

Snow days happen! We’re always happy to reschedule a performance or workshop due to weather-related school closings. Rescheduling for other reasons is subject to availability and will incur a $50 administrative surcharge.

What programs do you offer for my students’ grade level?

Check out our programs for Preschoolers (ages 4 and 5), Elementary Students (grades K-5), Middle Schoolers (grades 6-8), High Schoolers (grades 9-12), and Adults (parents and educators). Please contact us with any questions.

What technology does our school need to provide for your performance?

For some of our smaller-scale performances, like Stop Bullies, we ask that you provide a basic setup: a video projector for Power Point and a wireless microphone for the speaker. Our larger-scale performances, like The Grit Game Show, travel with all of the technology we need, including a full sound system—all you need to provide is a power outlet! We’ll fill in the details in a confirmation email when you schedule your program.
